Most duplicate content problems aren't caused by copying someone else's text. They're caused by the same page being accessible at multiple URLs on your own site.
On a static site with fixed routes, this is easy to control. On a dynamic site where URLs are generated from user input handles, slugs, project names it happens constantly and often invisibly. A user signs up as "DevJohn." Their profile lives at /devjohn, /DevJohn, /@devjohn, and /@DevJohn. Four URLs, one page, zero canonical tags. Google indexes all four as separate pages and splits your ranking signals four ways.
Fixing this requires a canonical URL strategy a set of rules that define exactly one correct URL for every piece of content, and enforce it across your entire site.
What Duplicate URLs Actually Cost You
The SEO impact of duplicate URLs is real but often subtle. Google doesn't penalize you for having duplicates the way it penalizes you for spam. Instead, it dilutes you.
When the same content is available at four URLs, any backlinks pointing to your page might be split across those four URLs. Internal links might target different versions. Google's crawl budget gets spent visiting the same content multiple times. And when Google has to choose which version to rank, it might choose a URL you didn't want.
Canonical tags are your way of saying: "Of all these URLs, this one is the real one. Index this. Rank this. Attribute everything to this."
The Four Sources of Duplicate URLs on Dynamic Sites
Understanding where duplicates come from helps you design the fix.
1. Case sensitivity
A URL is technically case-sensitive. /DevJohn and /devjohn are different URLs to a web server, even if your routing logic sends them to the same page. Google generally treats them as duplicates and tries to consolidate, but it may not always pick the version you want.
Fix: Normalize all dynamic URL segments to lowercase. If someone requests /DevJohn, redirect them to /devjohn with a 301.
2. Special character prefixes
Platforms that use @ or ~ as a prefix for user handles often make those prefixes optional or inconsistent. /@john and /john resolve to the same profile.
Fix: Pick one format and always redirect to it. If your canonical format is /john without the @, redirect /@john to /john unconditionally.
3. Trailing slashes
/john/ and /john are different URLs. Some frameworks add trailing slashes, some strip them, some are inconsistent based on how the route was defined.
Fix: Pick one convention (no trailing slash is more common for web apps) and enforce it globally via middleware or server config. Every request to /john/ gets a 301 to /john.
4. Query parameters
/papers?sort=date and /papers?sort=date&page=1 and /papers might all show the same content or very similar content. Search and filter parameters are especially bad for this.
Fix: For parameters that don't change the core content (like utm_source, ref, session_id), add a canonical tag pointing to the clean URL without those parameters. For pagination parameters (page=2), the canonical should usually point to the paginated URL itself, not always back to page 1.
Implementing 301 Redirects for URL Normalization
The most important fix is server-side redirects for case and prefix issues. These happen before the page renders and ensure only one URL ever serves content.
In an Astro project with a server adapter, you handle this in your dynamic route files:

This runs on every request. If the handle is already normalized, nothing happens. If it's not, the user (and any bot) gets redirected to the correct URL before seeing any content.
Do this for every dynamic route user handles, project slugs, paper slugs. The pattern is always the same: normalize, compare, redirect if different.
Setting Canonical Tags Correctly
Redirects handle the obvious cases. Canonical tags handle the rest especially cases where you can't or don't want to redirect.
The canonical tag goes in the <head> of every page:

Rules for canonical tags:
Always use absolute URLs. Include the protocol and domain. A canonical with a relative path is technically invalid and treated inconsistently by different crawlers.
Self-reference on unique pages. If a page has a single canonical URL and no duplicates, its canonical still points to itself. This is not redundant it explicitly tells Google this URL is the authoritative version and prevents it from inferring a different canonical.
Point to the normalized version. If for some reason you serve content at both /DevJohn and /devjohn (maybe your server is case-insensitive), the canonical on both pages should point to /devjohn.
Don't use canonicals instead of redirects for case/prefix issues. Canonical tags are a signal, not a directive. Google usually follows them, but it can ignore them if it decides another URL is more authoritative. Redirects are guaranteed. For normalization, use redirects. Use canonicals for the edge cases where redirects aren't possible.
Canonicals for Syndicated Content
One of the most useful applications of canonical tags is for content syndication. If you publish a paper on your Whitepaper profile and then cross-post it to Dev.to or Hashnode, you can tell those platforms to canonical back to your original URL.
Both Dev.to and Hashnode support canonical URL fields in their post editors. When you cross-post, set the canonical to your original paper URL:
canonical: https://whitepaper.so/devjohn/my-paper-slug
This means Google sees the cross-posted version, follows the canonical, and attributes all the ranking signals to your original post. You get the distribution benefits of cross-posting without losing SEO credit.
Testing Your Canonical Setup
Check with browser dev tools. Open any dynamic page on your site, view source, search for canonical. Confirm the URL in the tag matches exactly what you expect lowercase, no @, no trailing slash, absolute URL.
Test normalization with weird inputs. Manually visit /@YourHandle, /YOURHANDLE, /yourhandle/, and confirm each one redirects to the correct normalized URL. Check the redirect is a 301 (permanent) not 302 (temporary).
Audit in Search Console. The Coverage report in Google Search Console shows pages Google has indexed and the canonical URL it chose for each. If Google chose a different canonical than the one you set, that's a signal your redirect or canonical tag setup isn't working.
Check cross-post canonicals. After cross-posting, visit your Dev.to or Hashnode post, view source, and confirm the canonical tag points back to your original URL.
Building Canonical Enforcement Into Your Publishing Flow
Once your redirect rules are in place, add canonical URL generation to your metadata system so it's automatic on every page.
In your seo.ts helper, always set the canonical from the normalized URL passed in from the page never from any user-provided value or the raw request URL:

The page file is responsible for normalizing the URL before passing it to buildMeta. This keeps the responsibility clear: the page normalizes the URL, the metadata helper uses it without question.
The Result
A site with clean canonical URL enforcement is a site where every piece of content has one URL, one set of ranking signals, and one clear identity in Google's index. No dilution. No duplicate confusion. No crawl budget wasted on URL variants that all lead to the same page.
It's the kind of infrastructure work that doesn't produce immediate visible results but six months later, when your content is indexing cleanly and your rankings are stable, it's one of the reasons why.
